The Worst Advice You Could Ever Get About how to get the first character of a string in java

I am glad you asked, because this is the type of thing I think about every time I write a java class. This post is about why I feel as though Java needs a better way to handle string literals. Let me start by describing what I wrote.

The first line of every java string has to be a literal. Java uses a different literal syntax in each language than the other Java versions.

What happens is that Java doesn’t have any way to tell the different languages apart. So, a string literal is really a bunch of characters in a different order. Let’s say I have a string “Hello, World!” and I want to print out “Hello, World!”. In the first language I’d just write “Hello”, in Java, I’d need to write “Hello World!”, and so on.

Java also has its own way of dealing with what I call “nested” strings. A nested string is a string containing another string and other string. Lets say I have a string Hello, World and I want to print out Hello, World inside of that string.

So, now you have the inner string, you have the outer string, and then you have the nested string. So what you can do is, you can combine the two strings into a single string, and that’s called an array.

Hello, world is just a one-time array. If you need a way to combine a sequence of strings into one string, then you have to use a sequence-length-based array or array-like array.

You can do this a number of ways, but the most common one is to use a string-comparator (like String.compareTo(String)) to compare the strings. This will give you all the characters in a string, as well as the length of each.

With the exception of the String class, if you were to iterate through a String, you would have to iterate over each character, which is slow and not exactly intuitive.
